A GROUP in Weston which practises a craft dating back hundreds of years is looking for new blood to carry on the tradition.
Members of Weston Woodturning Circle use lathes, which are special machine tools for shaping wood, to take part in demonstrations at events across North Somerset to promote their art.
The practice dates back to medieval times and it was used by poorer people to fashion bowls and other cooking utensils.
John Warren, one of the group's founder members, said: "I have been interested in woodturning for some years now and it is a craft like any other which is in danger of dying out."
People of all ages and abilities go along to the monthly meetings, but those under 16 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
It is not expensive to get started as the group has its own lathe, but once members become more skilled they may wish to upgrade. Specialists visit the group from time to time to pass on top tips and there are also visits to arts and crafts fairs across North Somerset.
At last month's meeting, world famous woodturner Nick Agar demonstrated colouring and texturing techniques to the group, some of whom visited Sanders GardenWorld in Brent Knoll.
John, who is also the group's former chairman, added: "It is also a great social occasion, as you get invited to other people's workshops. It is absorbing and satisfying when you create something lasting and beautiful, or both."
The group also supports local charities. Since it was established in 2002, members have raised more than 1,000 for Weston Hospicecare and they also support Children's Hospice South West in Wraxall.
