REBUILDING computers, visiting a fire station and making Morse code machines are among the activities organised by the Weston branch of the National Association for Gifted Children.
The Explorers Club is the only branch of the association in the South West and attracts members from Weston and Bristol and from as far north as Gloucestershire.
The club provides an opportunity for unusually bright children to meet up with others in similar circumstances to learn about stimulating topics.
It also gives their families a chance to take part in the activities.
Branch committee member Helen Gilmore said: Sometimes there is a stigma attached to being very bright and our club provides an opportunity for the children to have fun in a more relaxed atmosphere.
It also means parents can meet up and get some advice, for example, if they are finding it hard to find their child a suitable school.
Helen said she is hoping for the membership numbers to increase.
She said: We currently have children ranging in age from three to 13 years old and they all come to the same sessions and are then split into suitable groups.
If we had higher numbers of older children it would mean we could run a completely different session for them, which could be made more challenging for them.
Helen, a rheumatology nurse at Weston General Hospital, runs the club voluntarily with teacher Caroline Ashworth.
