Formed in 2003, the Western Active Stroke Group caters for anybody who has been the victim of a stroke.
The group, which currently has 14 members who affectionately refer to themselves as strokers, caters for people of all ages affected by a stroke who wish to keep active both mentally and physically.
Started by chairman Jim Brown, with the aid of the National Stroke Association, the Western Active Stroke Group, regards itself as a member driven organisation.
It meets weekly to stage various activities aimed at enhancing the mind, body and spirit using light exercises and complimentary therapies with a qualified tutor.
The members meet every Tuesday at St Saviours Hall in Locking Road, Weston, and the Spring programme will include limb exercises, memory games, speech therapy, physiotherapy, guest speakers, cookery sessions and raffles as well as coffee mornings.
The group also takes part in social meetings, outings and group discussions.
Members are kept informed of forthcoming events by a regular newsletter full of useful information on stroke related topics, along with advice columns, handy numbers and news about services available to those who have had a stroke.
Almost one in four men and one in five women aged 45-85 can expect to have a stroke, and over three times as many women die from strokes compared with breast cancer.
A stroke occurs when part of the brain stops working because of problems with its blood supply. This leads to the classic symptoms of a stroke, such as a sudden weakness affecting the arm and leg on the same side of the body.
However, for every 50 spent on cancer research and 20 on heart disease, only 1 is spent on research into strokes.
Western Active Stroke Group raises its own cash and is always looking for voluntary help or donations. Anyone interested in joining or helping the group can call Bernard Sharps on 01934 832519 or Jim Brown on 01934 525654.
