Being a socially active group, the (not able) club has an interesting programme of activities aimed at giving its 50-plus members events to look forward to and remember.
Outings take place at least once a month and, although electric wheelchairs and scooters are sometimes available, the outings largely depend on having able-bodied volunteers to push the manual wheelchairs.
Recent outings have included a journey from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead on a steam train, a picnic in the park, visits to Slimbridge, Clarks Village, Portishead Marina, the SS Great Britain and a trip on the Gloucester canal.
Many of the places visited have easy access for the able bodied who can use public transport, but as this is not possible for the majority of Notable members, the club offers an exciting lifeline where time away from home can be enjoyed in the company of friends who are in a similar position.
A weeks holiday is also available for those who wish to join the club, as well as a tinsel and turkey weekend at Christmas. Both of these holidays are taken at a venue or hotel that is fully adapted for wheelchair users, and a minibus is taken to ensure the ability to get out and about once away.
The club meets every Thursday from 11am-2pm at Uphill Scout Hall in Windwhistle Lane, Weston, and a speaker is present at least once a month. As the meeting takes place over lunchtime, the members are offered rolls, soup or fish and chips. Regular pub lunches are held in fully wheelchair accessible venues.
Most members are picked up from home by a Weston & District Community Transport bus to ensure wheelchair users have a day out.
Those interested in joining The Notable Club, or becoming a volunteer, can contact the chairman, Peter Allen, or the club secretary, Dina Parker, on 01934 625994.
