The Bleadon Friendship Club was started in the swinging sixties and has been going strong ever since.
It is a unisex club which holds its meetings every Friday at the Coronation Hall in Bleadon.
Secretary Beryl Davis said: Its very much a social group which also helps elderly people to keep an eye on each other.
We have got about 30 members now but in its 60s heyday it is rumoured there was a waiting list for people who wanted to join.
Nowadays the group can offer a much broader agenda for its members.
In 2006 I obtained a grant enabling us to take a trip each month to places of interest in North Somerset and beyond.
This means members who normally eat alone get to have a lunch out with friends. Some of the places we have visited include Wells, Clarks Village in Street and Banwell Bone Caves.
The boys among the group enjoyed the trip to the Steam Museum in Swindon, the home of Great Western Railway, and they talked about it on the entire journey home.
The group is also planning a Christmas shopping excursion in Ottery St Mary.
The club makes provision for its less able members and purchased two wheelchairs earlier this year thanks to a grant from the Quartet Fund, a community charity.
Beryl added: This has made travel easier for our disabled friends. It also makes it safer to get some of our members to the weekly meeting. Crossing a busy road with two sticks is very hazardous.
