LAST weekend the nation stopped to remember those who have died in conflict, but a group of dedicated ladies - including one 103-year-old - spend the whole year working for the benefit of our ex-servicemen and women.

The Weston branch of the Royal British Legion Womens Section is all about raising funds and meeting new people.

Although part of the world famous Royal British Legion (RBL), the local womens section is completely separate from the mens and organises its own fund-raising and events.

Members are dedicated to the cause - the oldest member still turns up for most meetings at the age of 103. Most members are in their 80s and 90s and there are few under 65.

The Weston branch was formed in 1925 and has been raising money ever since.

President Pamela Haddrell said: No doubt many people in Weston will remember the ladies fund-raising on the seafront, at garden parties and fetes during the summer. All the members try to pitch in, making cakes, cooking burgers and sausages, manning stalls and selling goods.

The annual Christmas market was our main activity, but this is not so feasible now due to the age of our members. We have the occasional mini market at our monthly meetings though.

Many readers will associate the RBL with Remembrance Day, and last year the Weston womens section raised 260. Last year it raised about 2,700 in total.

Pamela said: The Poppy Appeal is even more important today, what with all the trouble in the world. It is important to help widows and those who are injured and needing our help. We would like to thank everyone who has continued to support the appeal, helping the people who have given so much to our country.

The ladies help raise funds for widows on low incomes or who have ill health or other difficulties and the welfare of children.

The branch is always looking for new blood and would like to welcome new members along to meetings which are held at 2pm on the second Wednesday of the month at the Boulevard United Reformed Church Hall in Waterloo Street.
