To the members of Der Blitzen Sphincters a Volkswagen is much more than just a car.
And almost a year after Weston’s only VW club was formed it is clear there are plenty of people in town who have caught the VW bug.
The club has attracted more than 100 members who share a love of the German automobile since the first casual meeting of 20 like-minded people last August.
The group now meets informally twice a month on the seafront and also takes part in shows and rallies in the area.
Founder Alan Cooper says the group has grown phenomenally from an innocuous invitation on the internet to scores of cars taking part in rallies through North Somerset.
Alan, the proud owner of a 1966 convertible Beetle, said: There used to be a VW club of sorts about two years ago but it eventually stopped and I got quite disheartened with the whole thing.
Then last summer I was trying to sell my van and used the money to buy a Beetle. I went on a national VW website and got in touch with a couple of guys from Weston who went down to a club in Taunton.
After going to Taunton I was amazed how many cars were about and that night when I got back I put a post on a national website about getting some people to meet up in Weston.
About 20 people met up and it has just grown from there.
The group takes part in events and shows and recently took part in a rally from Gordano Services in Portishead to Weston seafront. More than 200 vehicles took.
Beetles and Campers are members most popular choice of VW, but the cars come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Member Dan Snook has kitted his 1970 Beetle out with a 8,000 watt stereo system and a hydraulic suspension while Dave Plummer has lowered his roof by three inches.
Graham Snook has opted for something a little more high-octane and has transformed his Beetle into something of a Hot Rod which he takes drag racing.
Alan added: We meet on the prom by the Tropicana at 7.30pm on the last Friday of the month and the second Tuesday or Wednesday of the month.
The midweek meetings remain on the seafront and we have a chat, while the month-end meetings start at 7.30pm and then at 8pm we all drive out to The Full Quart pub on the A370 in Hewish.
It is completely informal and is just a group of people who own VWs having a chat. Nobody is in charge and its just a bit of fun.
