Only weeks after holding their 28th annual flower and vegetable show, planning has already begun for next year's event, which promises to be better than ever.

The club is as much about the social gatherings as well as green-fingered expertise, with regular visits to show gardens.

Pensioner Jean Buckler, who has been with the club for eight years, says it helps to get people in the village talking to each other.

The former Churchill Community School science teacher said: "It was great that youngsters turned up to the show last month and it would be nice to see more youthful faces at the meetings.

"The talks are always very informative and it's nice to go on trips to shows during the summer."

Recently, members went to the Royal Horticultural Society's Rosemoor gardens in Great Torrington.

Members try to spend as much time as possible outside, weather permitting, while in the winter months guest speaker's give talks at the club's base in Compton Bishop, so members can brush up on their skills.

Gillian Hazell will be dropping in to give a talk on growing and showing sweet peas next month, and Patrick Lunn will reveal his top tips on cultivating soft fruits in November.

As the year draws to a close, members will be looking forward to the annual Edwardian Evening and Supper in December.

Tea and biscuits are available at each meeting and the club is always on the look out for new members.
