Spinning instructor John Griffin, aged 75, will lead the indoor bike ride to raise money for Bristol’s Heart Institute (BHI) hospital and its fundraiser charity Above and Beyond to give thanks to the staff who saved his life.

John, from Wrington, suffered a heart attack in 2009 and has since had a number of procedures and treatments at the hospital.

He is now aiming to raise £10,000 through a 12-hour sponsored cycle next month at DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House in Congresbury.

John said: “I am raising money for these causes simply because the cardiologists, their teams and all the support staff have kept me alive and able to enjoy an active life.

“Treatment has been excellent and the staff have been dedicated, committed, focused and considerate while taking great pride in their work.”

People can hire a gym bike to take part in the sponsored ride with John and will have the choice to cycle for one hour up to the full 12.

He added: “I feel very fortunate to have received such expert treatment and am willing to help in any way to raise funds for the BHI.”

He hopes the money raised will go towards life-saving equipment to provide additional care for patients who use the service.

The University of Bristol’s BHI opened its hospital in Horfield Road in 2009 and provides a service to people with heart conditions in the city and across the South West.

Community fundraising officer for Above and Beyond Bristol, Lydia McGivern, said: “John has set himself a big challenge, but he is so full of energy and enthusiasm and I’m sure he will smash it.

“He has managed to get some amazing prizes for the raffle which will hopefully motivate people to hire a bike and join in.”

The charity raises money for the BHI and health centres which fall under the city’s University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

The challenge will take place on September 29 at theclub at Cadbury House.

Bikes are available to hire for £10 and those taking part will be also be entered into a raffle.

People who reach £100 in sponsorship funds will receive an Above and Beyond t-shirt.
