40-year-old companions club searches for volunteers

A weekly social group which has been running for almost four decades is appealing for new volunteers to come forward.
The Clevedon Happy Companions Club creates a safe place for the older members of the town to enjoy a day with other people.
The group’s future has been made more secure after securing a grant from the Quartet/St Monica’s Trust for its first paid role.
Temporary co-ordinator Anne Morley has joined the team in the new position to help the group become more established and ‘streamlined’.
To coincide with the new hire, the group is also looking for more people to come forward as volunteers to help with the weekly running of the club as well as drivers to take the elderly guests to and from Pembroke Court, in Elton Road, where it meets every Tuesday.
Volunteer administrator Heather Read said: “We need more volunteers, the club brings a small group of Clevedon residents in their ‘fourth age’ together every week for friendship.”
The club will celebrate its 40th anniversary year next year and has been run completely by volunteers whose main aim is to reduce social isolation and loneliness in the town.
People who attend the group pay £10 per day and receive morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and enjoy activities including crafts.
Anne said: “I have come onboard recently to help stream-line things at the club.
“It has been going for almost 40 years in Clevedon and that is an amazing achievement.
“I am working to formalise some of the processes and hopefully it will help the group to run smoothly for another 40 years.
“This can be made difficult with funding and various things working against us but it is great to be working with the club to take things forward.
“It is a great opportunity for the club and hopefully future funding will become available in order for it to grow.”
Volunteer drivers would be needed for one to two hours each Tuesday to take the club-goers to and from the weekly group while volunteers to help with the club itself would give up a few hours of their Tuesday to help the club continue to run.
