Warning after dog and owner ‘engulfed’ in massive swarm of underground wasps

Dog-walkers have been warned to be careful after a pet and its owner were attacked by thousands of wasps at the weekend.
Linda Reuter was walking her husky Lika along Causeway View in Nailsea on Sunday morning when the dog stepped on an underground wasps nest.
It led to the pair being ‘engulfed’ in wasps and suffering a large number of stings.
Lika required a veterinary check-over but is thankfully fine and back home with Linda.
Linda said it had been a ‘very nasty experience’ and both Lika and herself had been left shaken by the incident.
She has since contacted the police and North Somerset Council about the problem.
Linda said: “It was a very nasty experience and quite upsetting.
“The wasps are particularly aggressive as I found out to my cost.
“Their colonies are absolutely huge – when they are protecting the queen wasp, they are particularly aggressive.
“With winters less cold and not killing them off, I fear this is something that’s going to get worse around the area.”
Linda wants any dog-walkers which use the fields, on the outskirts of Nailsea heading towards Tickenham, to be careful as they go.
She shouted at fellow dog owners to be extra careful after the incident as it came completely out of the blue.
Linda said: “This is a dog-walkers’ field and a public right of way and we were engulfed in wasps.”
Such was the scale of the attack, that Linda was still finding wasps within Lika’s coat after taking her back to their home in Kingshill.
While both Linda and Lika will suffer no long-term effects from the incident, she is concerned others may not be as fortunate.
She said: “If someone has an allergic reaction (to a wasp sting) and doesn’t have an antihistamine with them, then we could be talking about a fatality.”
The council has told Linda it would send pest control experts to have a look for the nest and assuming they can find it, will destroy it to prevent any repeat attacks.
Underground wasps – or paper wasps as they are often referred to – are notorious for being very aggressive if they feel threatened or believe their nest is under attack.
