Two North Somerset venues have been at the heart of major Christmas and New Year television productions this year.

The television ratings battle is always hotly contested and the BBC chose to film two of its biggest shows in the district.

Eagle-eyed Doctor Who fans may have noticed that the Christmas Day special was shot at Leigh Court in Abbots Leigh and later this week Tyntesfield will be on show when Sherlock is screened.

Peter Capaldi, starring as the time-travelling hero, appeared in Doctor Who’s Christmas storyline alongside long-time sidekick Alex Kingston plus Matt Lucas and Greg Davies.

Most of Doctor Who is filmed in Cardiff, but the producers decided to bring the show to North Somerset to film some scenes in the grade II-listed mansion house.

Leigh Court only revealed its claim to fame on Twitter following Friday’s showing.

It tweeted: “We are honoured that scenes were filmed at Leigh Court.

“Thank you for letting us be part of the magic.”

North Somerset will be in the limelight for a second time this week, with the airing of the much-anticipated Sherlock tonight (Friday) at 9pm.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman star in the widely-acclaimed BBC adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous literary works.

Fans of the show have been waiting for months for the next episode and parts of it were filmed at the Tyntesfield estate in Wraxall.
