Thousands of pounds have been given to improve reading facilities at a Clevedon primary school.

Mary Elton Primary School in Holland Road has received £4,000 from the Tesco Bags Of Help scheme.

Tesco customers used tokens received at the checkout to vote for the school and earn it the highest possible amount.

The money will be used to create an outdoor space which children can read in.

Headteacher Dean Hudd said: “This is tremendous news for our pupils.

“The reading haven will be a massive part of our vision to inspire children to read for pleasure.

“Thank you to the whole Mary Elton community for their help with collecting the tokens to enable us to get this amount.”

Money for the Bags Of Help initiative is taken from the 5p plastic bag levy.

The scheme has awarded around £40million to almost 8,000 community projects across the UK.
