Avon and Somerset police joined forces with North Somerset Trading Standards to test whether businesses would sell alcohol to teenagers under the age of 18 this week.

Out of seven tested in North Somerset, one in Clevedon fell foul of the rules as did two in Weston.

PC Williams said: “Under-age drinking can leave youngsters vulnerable to becoming a victim of crime, or even committing a crime themselves. So it is essential that off-licenses, as well as pubs and clubs, take their responsibilities seriously.

“There are a variety of ways that we can deal with those that fail these purchasing tests - from issuing an £80 fixed penalty notice to undertaking a review of the premises’ license.”

North Somerset councillor Felicity Baker added: “This is another demonstration of how we work closely with the police to ensure licensees adhere to their obligations.”
