Plans for Nailsea's health hub unveiled.

EXCITING plans have been drawn up for a health hub in Nailsea to help people with a wide range of medical and social issues.

Heather Eardley from the Patients Association was given a £500 grant from Nailsea Town Council to compile a funding proposal and detail what services could be provided as part of the new facility.

Dubbed Nailsea Place, the report states the aim is ‘to build a new type of safe haven for the local population in order to contribute to the whole person’s health and wellbeing, self esteem, and access to a wide range of services’.

The new hub would be based in Nailsea shopping centre and bring all community groups together so people can access all the support they need under one roof.

At a town council meeting on December 17, chairman Clare Hunt said: “Having read the document I don’t think we’ve spent £500 better.

“We might end up having something in Nailsea which will considerably benefit the community, where people can meet for all sorts of reasons.”

The report claims research shows people attend GP surgeries for a wide variety of reasons, which are not always health related and stem from problems with debt, housing, bereavement and isolation.

It is hoped the new centre will become a base for people to access a wide range of support including how to care for older relatives or how to get home care or funding.

It would also enable people to learn how to keep themselves healthy with dietary advice, access to exercise classes and support for people with long-term health conditions including asthma and diabetes.

Art therapy will also be included so people can use painting, drawing, music, writing, dance, drama, poetry and pottery as a way of expressing and coping with emotions.

The hub would provide services which are not currently available in Nailsea but also bring together the organisations which are already based in the town.

The Patients Association is keen to provide ‘a walk-in place which is informal and friendly where people can find out what they need or meet other people to gain support and build a sense of community.’

As long as the funding for the project is granted, a pilot test site could be up and running between March 2015 and April 2016.
