An ‘elderly’ man has been found dead on a beach in Portishead.

Portishead Coastguard was called to Sugar Loaf Beach at around 11.15am on Monday after reports of a man struggling in the water.

The crew attended the incident alongside RNLI Portishead and the coastguard search and rescue helicopter from St Athan.

Paramedics, an air ambulance and Avon and Somerset police also assisted with the incident, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 11.55am on September 11 to reports of an elderly man in difficulty in the water.

“We attended with other emergency services.

“Sadly the man died and the matter has been referred to the coroner’s office.”

The death is not being treated as suspicious.
