A man was killed in an accident at Royal Portbury Dock last month.

The victim, who has not been named, was crushed to death on December 29 and pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of colleagues and the emergency services.

His employer, Svitzer, released a statement this week which said: “We regret to report that one of our valued tug crew members was involved in an accident in the Royal Portbury Dock during a manoeuvre involving two Svitzer tugs – The Moira and Ellerby. No other vessels were involved.

“While mooring the Moira alongside the Ellerby, a crew member was caught between the hulls of the two tugs.

“The emergency services were called immediately. Despite their efforts the crew member could not be revived and unfortunately was pronounced dead on site.”

The company offered its sympathies to the crewman’s family and said an investigation had begun.

The spokesman added: “We are currently awaiting the completion of the official investigation in order to understand the circumstances on how the crew member got caught in this position.”
