Police have confirmed the M5 is due to re-open ‘soon’ as the lorries involved in a collision in the early hours of the morning have now been removed from the carriageway.

The southbound carriageway has been partly shut between junctions 19 and 20 (Portishead and Clevedon) since 3.15am after three lorries collided.

One of them was carrying chemicals which needed to be removed before the motorway could be cleared.

Police have confirmed the lorries have been removed from the carriageway and the road is being cleared of debris, and should re-open soon.

There has been congestion on the A370, particularly through Backwell, as drivers have sought to avoid the problems on the M5.

Although the motorway is due to re-open soon, delays are still likely.
