Extra flood defence work to protect village

A flood storage embankment, designed to reduce the risk of flooding in Wrington, has won planning permission.
North Somerset Council wants to build it north of Rydings Farm off Silver Street.
Areas such as The Glebe have suffered flooding in recent years, and £750,000 has been sourced to bring about long-term improvements.
The flood storage embankment is the latest project designed to reduce the prospect of flooding in Wrington. Although it means building work on greenbelt land, North Somerset believes the community need for extra defence is more pressing.
The Environment Agency has reminded the council it needs to keep clearing rhynes.
It said: “A residual flood risk may remain to this location should blockage of the flood defence culverts occur.
“It is therefore essential the council regularly inspects these culverts for blockages and in particular when heavy rainfall warnings are issued by the Met Office or Flood Forecasting Centre.”
