A four-figure sum has been raised for Children’s Hospice South West by firefighters who ran on a treadmill while wearing full breathing apparatus.

Eight crew members took on the six-hour challenge at Sainsbury’s in Portishead, raising £1,171.60 in the
process.

Firefighter Daren Beacham said: “We recently carried out a community visit to the Children’s Hospice South West at Charlton Farm, Wraxall.

“We got to meet some of
the staff, children and families who use the facilities and decided we would like to try and help them with some fundraising.

“In our firefighting role we have to keep fit and many of us enjoy taking part in sponsored challenges, so we thought we would adopt the charity and take part in as many events as we can over 12 months.”

Sunday’s effort was just the start of the fundraising however.

The Three Peaks Challenge, the Portishead Triathlon, the Portishead 10K and the Bath Half Marathon lay in wait over the coming weeks and months.

However the attention of Daren, Oliver Hatfield, Philip Tripp-Edwards, Neil John, Craig Williams, Abel Woodley, Matthew Higgins and Matthew Hiscocks is now focused
on the Two Bays Tough 10 in Weston which is on February
21.

Pauline Rayner, from Sainsbury’s, said: “We wish the firefighters good luck with their fundraising challenges. The children’s hospice is such a deserving cause.”
