Drivers have been warned to plan their journeys as emergency resurfacing work begins on the M5 this afternoon (Tuesday).
Highways England will close three of the four northbound lanes at the foot of Tickenham Hill between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead).
A 200-metre stretch of the carriageway has also been closed, as well as the northbound entry slip road for junction 20.
Rob Llewllyn, Highways England network operations manager, said: “Surfacing of a section of the carriageway has failed and we are currently working hard to put repairs in place as quickly as possible.
“Unfortunately the closure will have an impact on traffic in the evening peak, and we apologise for any inconvenience.
“The road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so, but in the meantime we advise people to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider alternate routes.”
It is hoped the work will be completed at around 7-8pm tonight.
