Pupils are delighted that the school has taken on a dog to help them with their learning.

Luna is almost three months old and has joined the students of Trinity Primary School in Portishead for lessons.

At the moment, Luna is there to encourage children to respect all life, teach responsibility, motivate those children who are often not that attentive, help calm children down and improve academic achievement.

However, the long-term aim is for Luna to undergo training to provide therapy and also listen to children read.

Studies have proven that working with a dog can improve children’s social skills and self-esteem.

Avril Steel, Trinity’s bursar and her school caretaker husband Simon look after the dog outside of normal school hours.
