Clevedon pupils have been making bonding squares for a hospital baby unit.

Children at Mary Elton Primary School in Holland Road have been creating the squares for mothers and babies at the neonatal intensive care baby unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

The knitted items help babies bond with their mums through smells when they cannot physically be touched in a neonatal unit.

Headteacher Dean Hudd praised the pupils’ appetite for the project.

He said: “This has been a fantastic project to help out mums and their babies in St Thomas’ Hospital.

“There has been great interest and enthusiasm from the pupils.”

The squares have now been sent to the hospital.

St Thomas’ Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit cares for babies with breathing difficulties and other specialist treatment needs such as tube feeding and light therapy.

The hospital has 22 intensive care cots, 12 high dependency care cots and 18 special care cots.
