A dedicated volunteer who braved all weathers to shake collection tins for the RNLI has been commended for his efforts.

Dennis Crowley has been elected chairman of the RNLI’s Tickenham and Clevedon branch at the age of 97.

Mr Crowley, who is 98 in October, is ‘very pleased’ to be taking the helm.

He also received the gold badge from the RNLI in recognition of his outstanding achievement, collecting funds for the charity.

He could often be spotted around Clevedon in all weathers collecting and said it was something he ‘very much enjoyed’.

He added: “I am delighted to be made president. Age does not matter and my appointment proves that.

“I have enjoyed helping the RNLI over the years. I pretty much went where I was told to go, but it was something I enjoyed doing and you could say I stuck at it.”
