A lorry driver accused of killing a man from Yatton in a crash on the A370 will appear at Bristol Crown Court later this month.

John Parker was summoned to North Somerset Courthouse, near Weston, on February 28 to answer a charge relating to the death of Hugh Swain in Congresbury.

The 63-year-old, who lived in Mendip Gardens with his wife Maggie, died in the collision on June 9 last year.

The incident took place at a pelican crossing on the A370 and involved a lorry Parker was allegedly behind the wheel of.

Parker, of Fortfield Road in Whitchurch, was subsequently charged by Avon and Somerset Constabulary with one count of causing death by dangerous driving.

Due to the severity of the allegation, the 54-year-old was told by magistrates the matter would have to be dealt with at the crown court.

He will return to the dock on March 28 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

Magistrates decided to grant Parker unconditional bail until his next court date.
