Two small pieces of land have been purchased by North Somerset Council which will be used for the new Portishead railway line.

The authority has agreed to spend £65,000, plus £10,000 in legal fees, to buy 0.16 acres of land off Harbour Road and 0.12 acres off Quays Avenue. The total sum also includes lifting an overage agreement.

The land has been bought to help path the way for some alterations to Portishead.

Before the rail engineering works can begin, utilities need diverting and Quays Avenue must be ‘realigned’ – issues which the council believes will take four to six months to sort. The council was asked when these could potentially begin, but it failed to respond before the Times went to press.

It had been hoped the line would be up and running by May 2019. However, as previously reported by the Times, those schedules have been pushed back due to issues over designing the line, meaning it will be several months later before the track to Bristol is available.

North Somerset has previously estimated the line will be running by the end of 2019, while MetroWest which is overseeing the South West rail regeneration project suggests it will be ready ‘by mid-2020’.
