For your 50th birthday, you could be forgiven for putting your feet up and treating yourself to a spa day.

However, Lynn Rees from Portbury has bigger plans – 19,710ft tall plans to be precise.

She is one of 18 people which signed up to an epic adventure to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, to raise funds for the Great Western Air Ambulance (GWAAC).

The charity is wholly reliant on public donations and the team flew out to Tanzania on Saturday.

Joining her on the trip are two staff GWAAC members.

Emma Carter, its head of fundraising and marketing, plus its PR and media officer Laura Durrant, who lives in Clevedon, will also be taking on the heady challenge.

GWAAC chief executive John Christensen said: “This is a huge undertaking, and I know a lot of training and preparation has gone into it.

“I couldn’t do it, and I really admire them for taking this challenge on.

“They will come back with memories to last a lifetime, and a huge sense of accomplishment, safe in the knowledge that the money they have raised will help our crew continue to save lives.”

The challenge has raised £76,000 so far for GWAAC and it is expected to take the team seven days.
