Clevedon Pier has been awarded thousands of pounds in extra funding in a bid to create extra jobs in the area.

The pier, which had already been given £750,000 by the government’s coastal communities fund in 2014 towards its new visitor centre, has been handed a further £75,000 to help it create more employment opportunities and enable it to attract visitors all year round.

The Grade I-listed structure is one of only eight projects in the country to receive a share of an additional £800,000 made available through the fund - a project designed to boost the economies in seaside towns.

Simon Talbot-Ponsonby, chairman of the Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust, said: “We are delighted to have received this very welcome additional funding towards the project from the coastal communities fund.

“This has brought its total grant towards the project to £825,000.

“When combined with the £250,000 we have received from our members who have invested in community shares this brings us another significant step forward towards reaching our fundraising target.”

Mark Francois MP, the Government’s communities minister, added: “We’re determined to unlock the enormous potential of our Great British coast.

“Over the past three years we’ve already funded more than 200 projects along the shorefront – from piers and promenades to shop fronts and sailing centres – to attract tourists, boost jobs and create vibrant local economies.

“Now this extra £800,000 will help put another eight coastal communities back on the map and kick-start their own exciting regeneration plans.”

A further £52,000 was also given to the MV Balmoral towards its 2016 cruising schedule.

The ferry, which returned to the North Somerset coast last summer after three years out of action, was awarded £344,000 by the coastal communities fund in early 2014 to bring it out of retirement.

The extra funding will enable it to run a greater schedule this year and visit more locations around the country, including a return to Clevedon Pier.
