A Clevedon health club is being forced to close after its owner was handed an ‘enormous’ repair bill to fix the former Victorian market hall it is based in.

Body Management, in Alexandra Road, will shut its doors on August 31 after more than a decade at the grade-II listed building.

The venue requires regular maintenance and its owners asked Body Management director,
Mike Neck, to pay for building work as part of the lease agreement.

However, with the company’s lease due to expire in 16 months the decision was taken to close the gym.

Mr Neck said: “This is something that is very sad for me and the team, and we have done everything in our power to stop this happening.

“The owners handed me an enormous bill for building work as part of my lease agreement.

“If I paid we could stay until the end of my lease but the amount would not cover me for holding on for this short time.

“The lease would be terminated as they feel Body Management could not keep up with the cost of maintaining the market hall and feel it would end up dilapidating – the market hall is a very expensive place to maintain.

“So unfortunately this didn’t leave many options.

“This decision happened over a very short time.

“It is going to be very sad for lots of people who have trained here for years.”

Mr Neck says he has looked elsewhere in Clevedon for a new premises but the search has so far proved unsuccessful.

However, he has thanked users for their support throughout his 10 years with the company.

He added: “We are so sorry and wish there was something we could do as we understand how much of a hub this has become for you all.

“We managed to create a place for everyone; young, old, big, small – it does not matter.

“We are truly gutted and will miss you all dearly.

“I thank all that have offered their help and wish we could have done more to stay.”

Body Management offers state-of-the-art fitness equipment as well as a variety of classes and a team of six qualified personal trainers.
