An award-winning charity is appealing for more volunteers to help it handle the ‘mind-blowing’ number of people it supports.

Clevedon Care, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in October, was set up in 1985 to provide support to vulnerable members of the community by providing help with shopping or DIY tasks and visiting the sick.

It became a registered charity in 1987 before moving to its current base at St John’s Church Hall in Hillside Road 12 years later, when it began to focus more on providing transport to and from medical appointments.

The group’s volunteer force currently consists of 50 drivers and about 25 office staff, but more are wanted to meet increasing demand.

Volunteer Bill Spencer, who has been a driver with the charity for eight years, said: “With the drivers it is normally someone willing to do a few hours a week.

“The majority are willing to go to Bristol, but some can only do local trips.

“We do about 80 trips a week which is pretty mind-blowing.

“The amazing thing is that it just works.

“Every person you talk to is so grateful.

“It is that sort of thing that makes it so good.

“We are blessed in Clevedon to have this as nowhere else has that many (volunteers) in this area.”

Drivers, whose costs are reimbursed by donations from clients, can do up to three journeys a week while office volunteers are asked to cover a morning or afternoon once a fortnight.
