A nurse from Portishead who has worked at Children’s Hospice South West since it opened is encouraging others to consider taking up the rewarding career.

Kathy Mansfield, aged 61, says some of her greatest achievements have come from working at the hospice in Charlton Farm, Wraxall, supporting families caring for children with life-limiting conditions.

She said: “What I enjoy most is working in a beautiful environment alongside inspirational families and truly amazing colleagues and having the time to get to know our children and their families really well.

“We have the opportunity to be flexible, sometimes looking outside the box to find the best way we can support them.

“It’s not about the way we do things, it’s about doing it the way the child and family want.”

When asked about her greatest achievements, she said: “Helping a young teenager who had, among other problems, some learning difficulties and no sight, to negotiate a wooden fort to access the slide he was very keen to try out.

“This took about 20 minutes of step-by-step guidance from me and enormous trust and concentration on his behalf as he had to cross a plank and rope bridge, climb ladders and crawl through low tunnels.

“However, it was definitely worth all the effort to participate in his excitement. The massive grin on his face lasted until after we got back to Charlton Farm and he’d told everyone he met.”

Charlton Farm is celebrating its 10th birthday this year and it is looking for more children’s nurses to join its dedicated team of staff.
