There is heavy congestion on the M5 between Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare this morning (Tuesday) after roadworks were not completed on time.

The motorway is closed southbound between Weston and Burnham-on-Sea, leaving traffic approaching Junction 21 gridlocked with motorists experiencing 50-minute delays.

The closure is also causing congestion throughout Weston, particularly on the A370 with cars following a diversion through the town to East Brent and the A38 before rejoining the M5 at Junction 22.

Roads in villages, including Yatton and Congresbury, are also clogged following the closure.

The roadworks were due to finish at 6am, but the AA reports the new road surface needs to cool down and set before the M5 can be reopened.

Highways England reports the closure will be in place until at least 8am.

UPDATE – 8.45am: Highways England reports the southbound slip road has reopened, and the main carriageway will open shortly.
