Portishead Town Council has been involved in lengthy negotiations which has unlocked £34,000 of funding from North Somerset Council to help keep the youth centre doors firmly open.

The town council has already pledged £25,000, taking the total to £59,000 to help cover the costs of the day-to-day running of the building, which includes employing an administrator and caretaker.

The youth centre management committee is now desperately trying to raise funds to cover the salaries of youth workers so that a youth service can continue in the town.

All youth workers at the Portishead centre will lose their jobs on April 1 as part of North Somerset Council’s budget cuts.

Grants for youth activities will be available from the unitary authority in the summer but even if the centre is successful in its grant aid application, there will still be a gap of several months with no funding for youth workers.

Portishead Youth Centre patron, North Somerset MP Dr Liam Fox, has vowed to help the centre managers explore the possibility of central Government funding to ensure a dedicated youth service is available to the young people of Portishead.
