A campaign group in Portishead wants to bring an end to perceived ‘party politics’ which it feels is harming the town.

ProDEM BS20 will meet on Friday night to discuss the benefits it believes Portishead would experience if it voted in fully independent councillors.

Dr Geoff Camplin, who set up the idea 18 months ago, said: “We feel there is a need for independent councillors rather than party politics.

“It feels like we have a one-party system with the Government, North Somerset Council and Portishead Town Council all being Conservative run.”

Frome’s electorate voted in an independent town council and one of its members, Peter Macfadyen, will be speaking at Friday’s ProDEM meeting, which will start at 7.30pm at The Folk Hall, in High Street.

Dr Camplin is keen to see if there is an appetite for non-party councillors in Portishead and says if so it would consider putting independent candidates forward for the next round of local elections in 2019.

He said: “It’s up to residents at the end of the day.

“But we are trying to get Portishead Town Council to be more transparent.

“To be fair, under the current chairman Lesley Cottrell she’s made some advances, but there are still problems with minute-taking.”
