New charity shop for Portishead

10 March 2010

PORTISHEAD High Street saw the opening of another charity shop.

Children's Hospice South West (CHSW) opened at 74 High Street, taking the total to four within a stone's throw from each other.

The transformation of the former bookmakers, which has been empty for several years and in a state of disrepair, has been welcomed.

Portishead Chamber of Trade president Tony Walmsley said: "It's always good to see a vacant shop given a facelift and keeping a vibrant high street with a mix of local independent and national brand retailers is essential for the town.

"Charity shops have a vital role to play, especially with regard to the re-using of unwanted items and reducing society's waste."

The charity is now asking for volunteers to help in the shop.

CHSW regional retail manager Sharon Elliott said: "As a shop volunteer people get the opportunity to undertake a number of tasks and can choose a role which suits them best."

The new Portishead shop is also looking for donations of good quality clothing, books, toys, games and more.

Money raised from the CHSW shops helps the charity to continue providing specialist hospice care for families with children who are not expected to reach adulthood.
