Council WILL support barn project

07 March 2010

NAILSEA Town Council has agreed to continue supporting the Tithe Barn restoration project.

The matter was brought before the town council to consider the tenders for the restoration works, and councillors have agreed to forge ahead with the project and negotiate a price for the work to be done with the two lowest bidders.

Town council clerk, Ian Morrell, said: "The cost issue causing the most concern is what the level of contingency might be because being a medieval building you have a higher risk of unforeseen problems.

"It's not like building from scratch, it's preserving an old building, so that's the biggest risk.

"At each stage in this long process the town council has been presented with the latest information and asked whether it is happy to move forward.

"The council is committed to getting the restoration done and having the barn available for community use."

The council hopes to release the figures for the cost of the restoration at the end of March when the contract has been awarded.
