Teacher takes on challenge

10 March 2010

A WORLE teacher will be spending his summer holidays hiking 1,000 kilometres across the South West.

David Eckett, a head of year at Priory Community School, will be covering parts of the South West coast path in just four-and-a-half weeks.

The 45-year-old is hoping to raise at least £10,000 for Children's Hospice South West and Help for Heroes.

The Cross resident said: "I have completed several sections of the path in recent years, but I have never attempted anything as ambitious as 31 days of continuous walking.

"The trail passes through some of the most spectacular scenery, so I will not be bored."

The hospice is the adopted charity of Priory school for this year and Help for Heroes, which supports injured people in the services, is also a cause David feels passionate about.

He said: "I have not had to face up to the dangers and sacrifices that war presents, unlike my parents and grandparents.

"Putting aside the political argument regarding Britain's military commitment to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, I believe that sick and injured service personnel should be given the best possible support once their war is over."

The trek will certainly not be all hard work, as David is seeing it as a chance to indulge his two favourite pastimes - photography and drinking real ale.

He added: "Not only is there so much dramatic scenery to be enjoyed but also there will be opportunities to record some of the West Country's wonderful wildlife.

"And having walked more than 20 miles a day, I think I will be in a position to appreciate a pint, re-hydration will be an important consideration throughout the event."

As a bit of extra support David, who sets off for his walk on July 24, has received some words of encouragement from adventurer, soldier and explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

A message sent to David said: "The commitment, dedication and perseverance required to complete this 1,000km walk deserves your support and in so doing would benefit so many of our heroic service personal and special young people. Good luck."
